A Note from the Secretary
Colleagues,
I wanted to say thank you to all of our staff here at UMB from your current Staff Senate. I hope you have a wonder summer season and safe travels as schools finish and we spend time with our family and friends.
I wanted to also remind you that starting next month, our new Staff Senate term begins with some new faces in addition to those you are already familiar with.
I encourage you to attend our monthly meetings to get to know your senators as we are here to help you.
Thank you and hope to see you at the next meeting.
Sincerely,
Tom Hockensmith
UMB Staff Senate Secretary

Post-Key Bridge Collapse Commuting Survey
The Staff Senate asks for your participation in an anonymous survey to get your feedback on changes you may be experiencing commuting to and from campus before and after the Key Bridge collapse on March 26, 2024. The UMB Staff Senate will present a summary of the anonymized data to UMB senior leadership in order to best represent current staff concerns and needs. Your time taking the survey is greatly appreciated.
Thriving at UMB: Benefits, Perks, and Discounts to Improve Your Work-Life Balance
As part of UMB's commitment to our employees, the Human Resource Services team wants to help you discover and access all of UMB’s exceptional benefits, perks, and discounts — some of which you may have never heard of — that are tailored to enhance your professional and personal life.
From a robust Live Near Your Work program (a homebuying assistance initiative for employees in select West Baltimore neighborhoods) to tuition remission (which provides employees with the opportunity to take classes at a University System of Maryland institution with waived tuition), UMB’s list of other benefits, perks, and discounts is extensive.
This short, 10-question survey aims to gather insights from faculty, staff, and affiliates regarding their feelings about summer, their workflow during this season, and the activities they engage in. The data collected will be used to create an Elm story highlighting the summer preferences within the UMB community as a means to share information about UMB benefits that may be used during the summer.
Join the UMB Police and Public Safety for a quarterly Safety Awareness Meeting. Attendees will review safety tips, hear crime updates, learn about UMB Police and Public Safety resources, and provide feedback to the department. Students, employees, and neighbors are invited to attend.
The meeting will take place in-person on Wednesday, August 14, with lunch provided. Additional information including time and location will be provided as the date gets closer, so keep an eye out in The Elm.
UMBrella Coaching Program Applications Open
The UMBrella Coaching Program aims to engage women in a rich program complete with supportive coaches, networking opportunities, and exclusive activities designed to enhance the coaching experience.
Each participant engages with a coaching group (which includes one coach and four to six fellow participants) during monthly meetings to discuss career-related topics. The program features learning events, useful self-assessment tools, an UMBrella mixer, panel discussions, and a closing ceremony.
Eligibility: Current UMB Employees (Faculty and Staff)
Program Timeline: September 2024 - April 2025 (Cohort 7)
Applications for Cohort 7 will be accepted from June 3 - July 26.
