Finding Strength in Gratitude

As the calendar turns to November, bringing with it shorter days and the start of the holiday season, it’s a natural time to pause and reflect.

In a year marked by continued change and complex challenges, it is often the simple act of recognizing what we appreciate that provides the necessary anchor and perspective. We want to take a moment to express our deep gratitude to you, the dedicated staff of our university. Your resilience, adaptability, and unwavering commitment to our students and our mission are the foundational strength of this institution.

We are grateful for the ways you have all navigated the shifts in our workplace, often going above and beyond to ensure essential functions continue seamlessly. We are also grateful for the opportunity we have in the Staff Senate to represent your interests and amplify your voices in the shared governance of the university. Every meeting, every discussion, and every collaboration we participate in is driven by the goal of supporting your vital work.

As we move toward the winter holidays, we encourage everyone to practice self-care and take time to connect with friends, family, and colleagues. By pausing to acknowledge the good around us, we build the resilience necessary to face future challenges together.

Thank you once again for everything you do. Wishing you a restorative and grateful season.

If you ever want to connect — to share a concern, ask a question, or just say hello — our anonymous feedback form is always open.

Season of Giving campaign flyer with turkey

Support the UMB Staff Senate’s Annual Season of Giving

As we enter the height of the holiday season, please consider joining the many UMB faculty, staff, students, and friends who have already shared their holiday spirit by supporting this year’s Season of Giving Campaign.

Here are some FAST FACTS about each Season of Giving drive:

THANKSGIVING TURKEY DRIVE

Eliminate the stress of purchasing a turkey and help create a holiday memory for a West Baltimore family.  Every $25 contributed will provide a family of four one frozen turkey (12-16 lbs.).

  • We’ve reached 76% of our goal to purchase 300 turkeys ($7,500) by Nov. 24.
  • We still need 72 turkeys!
  • Support the Thanksgiving Drive.

CHRISTMAS STORE DRIVE

Make the holidays special for families in our West Baltimore with a gift to this year's Christmas Store. In partnership with the Foundry Church of Baltimore, parents and guardians can shop for their children at the UMB Community Engagement Center for a discounted cost.

  • We’ve reached 57% of our $1,500 goal.
  • The drive closes Dec. 12 and these funds will be used to purchase gifts to stock our Christmas Store shelves and tables.
  • Support the Christmas Store with a monetary gift.
  • Support the Christmas Store with a toy purchase from one of our wish lists.

UMB Staff Senator Spotlight

Spotlight shining on employee Nicole Nash Major Gift Officer

What’s something you’ve accomplished on the Staff Senate during your time as a Senator?
One of my goals as a new staff senator is to ensure that ALL staff at UMB feel as though they belong and play an important role at the university. As a frontline fundraiser, I spend a lot of my time at work sharing news about all the interesting and impressive things that we are doing here at UMB with alumni, donors, and friends of the university. It’s my hope that our internal staff are aware and proud of all the great things we are doing as well!

What’s a fun vacation that you’ve taken or would like to take?
I recently went to the Florida Keys with my family. After a few failed attempts, my kids were finally brave enough to try snorkeling. It was super fun to see them work up the courage to try something new and to discover a new world through their eyes.

What’s your most prized possession and why?
My dog Rosie. She’s an 8 year old lab and she’s the sweetest thing in the world. She really completes our family. And she’s always happy to see me!

What’s the theme song to your life?
Walls (Circus) by Tom Petty. A good reminder that there will always be good days and bad days but everything usually works out in the end.

See You Soon!

Our next meeting is Thursday, December 4th from noon to 2 p.m.
All UMB staff members are welcome and encouraged to attend.
