Spotlight on UMB’s Talent (and Spirit!)

It’s not every day you get to see both your colleagues and students perform a cultural dance, sing Paramore, or play Bach on the mandolin. But last week’s UMB’s Got Talent reminded us just how much creativity, humor, and heart lives across our campus.

From soulful songs and original spoken word to acrylic paintings, handcrafted art, and detailed illustrations, the evening was a vibrant showcase of the talents that make UMB such a special place to work and learn. With faculty, staff, and student performers representing nearly every school and unit on campus, the event captured the essence of “Seven Schools, One University.”

๐Ÿ‘ A huge thank you to everyone who came out to support the show, and especially to our incredible performers and artists! Special recognition goes to this year’s winners:

Talent Show Winners:
1st Place: Arnelle Etienne - "Berlin" (SOP, student)
2nd Place: Olaoluwa Adebajo - "A Million Years Ago" (SOM, student)
3rd Place: Em Sea Water (Borndavid McCraw)  - "Oh Baltimore" (poem) (Central Admin, staff)

Crafted Creations Gallery Winners:
1st Place: Latisha Brown - Paintings and Drawings (Central Admin, staff)
2nd Place: Oacia Fair - Acrylic Painting (SOP, staff)
3rd Place: Nathaniel NACIR Ervin - Painting (CREMA Coffee, staff)

And of course, none of this would have been possible without the dedication and creativity of our planning committee — Stephanie Brandal, Briana Clark, Vivian Hill-Lawson (co-chair), Jason Noel, Dana Rampolla, Ray Stolle (co-chair), and Lei Zhang — who represented the UMB Staff Senate University Life Committee, Faculty Senate, and Council for the Arts and Culture. Thank you all for helping bring this joyful tradition to life!

UMB Staff Senator Spotlight

\"Spotlight

What’s something you’ve accomplished on the Staff Senate during your time as a Senator?
As a newly elected Senator, I had planned to primarily observe and learn. However, I was nominated for an Executive Board position as the inaugural Operations Officer (a role for new senators). Before this, I had served on the University Life committee and then transitioned to the Council for University System Staff (CUSS) committee. I also contributed to the Staff Senate Retreat committee. I am excited about taking on the leadership role on the Elections committee.

What’s a fun vacation that you’ve taken or would like to take?
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, I embarked on an enriching journey through several cities in Colombia, South America. I am looking forward to exploring more of South America!

What’s your most prized possession and why?
My most prized possession is my spirit of determination. Despite triumphs and trials, success and setbacks, I am proud to have never given up nor settled.

What’s the theme song to your life?
I have two: Mariah Carey’s “Make It Happen” and Jay Z’s “Moment of Clarity.”

See You Soon!

Our next meeting is Thursday, May 1st from noon to 2 p.m.
All UMB staff members are welcome and encouraged to attend.
