Details

This program invites participants to explore the diverse identities, histories, and experiences within Southwest Asian and North African (SWANA) and Middle Eastern/North African (MENA) communities in the United States. While often grouped under broad labels, these communities represent a wide range of cultures, languages, and lived experiences that are frequently overlooked in public discourse.
The session will also examine the implications of how these identities are categorized in systems such as the U.S. Census, including ongoing discussions around the inclusion of a distinct MENA category. Participants will gain insight into how data classification impacts visibility, resource allocation, and access to services for SWANA and MENA communities.
Through guided conversation and shared perspectives, this program will create space to better understand identity, belonging, and representation within these communities and consider how institutions can more effectively support them.
This interprofessional program is open to all students, faculty, and staff interested in advancing culturally responsive practices and inclusive engagement.
